In about 3 hours, the clock will move the hands to officially begin Daddy Day. Although almost every national holiday has been invaded by Hallmark or was invented by Hallmark, or was proclaimed by some porker in Congress, we can still take joy in the pause to recognize whatever the event is. June is a great time for recognition with a full month for the following including the oddly named “fight the filthy fly month”:
- Aquarium Month
- Candy Month
- Dairy Month
- Fight the Filthy Fly Month
- Gay Pride Month
- National Accordion Awareness Month
- National Adopt a Cat Month
- National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month
- Rose Month
- Turkey Lovers Month
I wonder how much time actually went into getting recognition as “fight the filthy fly” month. Or, who thought that getting this recognition was a good time on task? As we dig deeper, though, we learn that there is more time on the calendar for all kinds of recognition. Daddy day comes after National Bubba Day, Applesauce Cake Day and World Sauntering Day. It precedes National Chocolate Eclair Day, Hug Holiday and National Waffle Iron Day. (You can see the details below).
Most people call it Father’s Day but my sister, Carol, once long ago gave us a needlepoint that said, “any man can be a father but only a special one can be a dad.”
So, for Sunday, June 19th, it is time to say Happy Dad Day to Bob and Carl. They are working on being role models for men everywhere and no doubt we all are proud of their accomplishments. Two years ago Kate and Brian thought (and were pretty close to the truth) that they might not be able to celebrate Dad Day with their dad. That by the time the day came around, the day might be a horrid reminder of a grim outcome. About that time in 2009, when I was asked how well I was holding up, I said that one of the most difficult parts of my life was being a parent of children whose father might be dying. That is not a role anyone would want to wish for.
As for today, now with two years beyond all that, we can say a Happy Dad’s Day.
The riders met the half way point yesterday but because of the route, they have only 11 days left to ride. A week from Wednesday is when I will be flying to Miami and then on to Key West.
They have just finished for the evening, arriving into Charleston, as I write this. Bob’s 8:35 PM text says they had a bad day of riding with a narrow berm just to the right of big rumble strips and lots of loud fast traffic. Not a day that sounds like much fun but he remarked that the last 15 miles into Charleston were pleasant.
Someone needs to make an “improved roads for bikes” day, no not day, or month but year. Yes, year. That might be a start. That seems much more necessary than National Fight the Filthy Fly Month.
